I like to keep in shape year round. During warmer weather, it isn’t a problem. But since moving a little more north, I was getting cabin fever cooped up indoors in freezing cold weather. I have a hectic work schedule, and the several gyms we tried in our town are always busy. Ever time I would go to the gym, it meant changing, driving, waiting for a treadmill or elliptical machine, driving home, showering. So it was only natural that we considered getting an elliptical machine of our own, considering all the other factors I hate about working out in the gym (pounding music, being stuck watching stuff I didn’t want on TV, overworked machines, annoying people, no temperature control, etc).

Almost every review I write is about a positive experience I have had with a product. This is not the same situation. I am reviewing the Weslo Cadence 340CS treadmill. This treadmill is slotted for someone on a budget but with a little bit more money you can get a much better unit. There are no bells and whistles with the 340CS. I actually spotted this treadmill at Target for $299.99 and decided to try it out. I have quite a bit of treadmill experience and knew that this was not something I was going to like but for the price I felt I’d give it the benefit of a trial run. I wore out a few stair machines and never really stuck with rowing or cycling, so I thought I would try an elliptical trainer. So far, it’s pretty much what I expected based on the input from friends who have used ellipticals. The Precor EFX 5.23 is sturdy, stable and quiet, which is very important to me. It features program adjustable ramp angle and resistance, which allows tailoring the workout to what sort of shape I’m in and my fitness goal of the moment. The control panel has a water bottle holder and can function as a reading rack. The included “Polar” brand heart monitor chest strap works well and the EFX 5.23 can use this input to control the resistance if you want to work at a particular heart rate.
