The Reebok C3500 Treadmill (Also seen as 3500 C) is a newer machine. After reviewing the Reebok 900 Elliptical which a few people had problems with I was curious to see other machines in Reebok’s line. I found it in a facility where I could spend as much time with it as I wanted. I want to make it clear that you will never find me reviewing machines from the floor of Sports Authority.

General Information::

The 3500 weighs 285 pounds which is the norm for a treadmill in the $1000 price range. Like ProForm’s many machines, Reebok’s 3500 is a space saving model. This means that it folds. It gets folded with a latch. You will then tilt it by stepping on the base. It roles on wheels. It is heavy so please be careful doing this. The guideline is that you should be able to lift 45 pounds to be able to move this machine. Before I go on I want to say that Reebok, like ProForm are made by the giant, ICON fitness. Thus many of the features are similar or the same.

The maximum user weight is 300 pounds which is a nice number for this price range. You will be able to find similar treadmills with a maximum user weight of 250 or 275 pounds.

It measures about 71 inches long by 25 inches wide by 39 inches high. This is a long machine but it is also a short machine in height which may or may not be good for you if you love the fan feature.

ICON’s warranty for the 3500 is 1 year on parts and labor and 15 years for the drive motor.

The Belt and Deck: Unless you are very short the size of the deck and belt should be something you look at carefully. I do. If one is too narrow or short it can make walking or running on it uncomfortable and even dangerous. The Reebok C3500 has a belt that is 20 inches wide by 60 inches. Those are really nice numbers to have. The rule of thumb guidelines for the size of a belt is at least 17 inches by 50 inches.

Various machines call their decks by different absorption names. ProForm has a ProSoft Impact Absorption and a Pro Sox Impact Absorption. Reebok’s 3500 has what they call a DMX Adjustable Cushioning deck. I have seen these before and it is a really nice feature. A knob on the base of the deck allowed me to change the deck’s cushioning from soft to firm. This is great for me because I have feet that get sore and I found that playing around with the different cushioning levels made a difference. It is also a nice feature for those of you who are used to running outside on concrete but are now running inside. You will want a firmer surface than perhaps other treadmills give.

The machine is quiet enough. I would say that in treadmills you do get what you pay for. Although Reebok considers this a low end machine it is still twice as much as others I have reviewed. I think the deck is a tad quieter than a $500 machine’s deck is however it isn’t so noticeable that I would say to go out and buy it immediately for this reason.

The Design: I found a nice console with two areas in which to put my water bottle, cell phone and towel. There is a magazine rack as well.

If you have read other treadmill reviews of mine this will be redundant but I must say that the placement of the handles is something I look at. I got an e-mail from a physical therapist who wanted to buy a treadmill with rails. I searched and found her two but it took me quite awhile. The treadmills of the past with railings are just not made. This is too bad because side railings are important for older people. On the 3500 I found the typical two short handles on each side of the machine. The handle below the console is a nice one. It isn’t just a small bar. This is where the pulse sensors are which when held measured my heart rate

There is a key clip on the machine which is a safety feature. A cord is attached to the machine and the other end clips to your clothes or finger. If you fall the cord pulls and the machine stops immediately.

A closer look at the console:

I found the same built-in CoolAire fan on Reebok’s C3500 as on other machines. There is one fan not two that you may see on more expensive machines. A common complaint that I hear is that the fan is too low on machines. It is very low on the 3500. There is a good possibility that this may not hit you where you want it but still if you like fans you will have air blowing around you.

The Reebok 3500 has a 4 window 7 x 10 LED Matrix console that showed me my pulse rate, speed, time, distance, incline, pace and calories burned. What the Matrix means is that I was shown a 1/4 mile track that monitored how many times I went around the track. Some find this annoying and cover it; some don’t care; some like it. I don’t care. I don’t use it because that isn’t how I monitor my progress. The 7 x 10 is the size of the Matrix which lights up. This size screen is large. I’ve seen larger. Some take up almost the entire console. This is a good compromise in my opinion.

I got 10 programs on the C3500 rather than 6 on the $700 ProForm CX18i. Every treadmill has a quick start program including the 3500. This allowed me total control of level of the deck and how fast I went. However no matter what program I chose I could always hit the up or down arrows to change intensity levels. To name a few programs, I got walk, jog and run. Like other machines whether I chose a set program or created my own the machine adjusted itself to the program. Again this could be changed at any time.

Many machines have what they call QuickSpeed and QuickIncline features. The Reebok 3500 has what is called One Touch Speed Control which is the same as the QuickSpeed feature. It allowed me to increase my speed or decrease it immediately. I didn’t have to push the incline or decline button for each tenth of a mile per hour faster that I want to walk. The machine goes up to 12 miles per hour which is more than adequate. The incline level which goes from 0% to 10% is moved up or down with the arrows. There is no QuickIncline feature on the C3500.

Reebok’s 3500C Treadmill has a 2.0 horsepower. You will want a 1.5 to 2.5 horsepower so you are all set – right in the middle with this one- well sort of.

My thoughts:

Please check with your doctor before starting an exercise program. Please do not allow your children on or around your treadmill and that includes pets!

The Reebok C3500 has everything you could want. I have a couple of concerns however which is going to lead me to give this machine an average rating. For the money or less you can get as much as you can with this machine. Also since it does seem that Reebok has had some problems in the past and this is a newer model it is a bit too soon to say if Reebok has cleaned up their act. I like their machines in general but long term use of the machines is questionable and I don’t want to be the one to make you the guinea pig for this model. I am generalizing which I don’t like to do. I am not talking about ICON. ProForm is an ICON brand and I would choose a comparable treadmill by ProForm over the Reebok C3500.

In addition although a 2.0 horsepower is just fine, this machine has a large deck with a heavier maximum weight user than other machines. I think they should have put more power on it. I had no problem using the machine but common sense tells me that the horsepower should match the rest of the machine.

I hope this has helped. I was going to recommend it but as I went to write that I asked myself why. I wouldn’t buy it. If I were to buy it the price would have to come down.
