For the past four months, I have been researching treadmills with the goal of buying one that suits my needs and I wanted to share what I have learned with you. When I started, I thought it best to go to different fitness stores and talk to sales people, but that was hit and miss since some of the sales people knew a lot and some didn’t know much. The other thing that I did was to look up treadmill reviews at the library and on the internet (I will give you the details later in the review). Finally, when I had brought the list of treadmills to something manageable, I visited the stores again and ran on the two treadmills I liked best.

Let me start this by telling you a little bit about my experience with running and treadmills. I have been running for about 10 years on and off and have used treadmills and the great outdoors on and off, I weigh 180 pounds and am a debatable 6ֵ. When using a treadmill, I use a LifeFitness 9500 at Bally’s fitness. My goal for the new treadmill is to work up to a running pace for 45 minutes a day for four days a week, I currently run 30 minutes for 3 days a week. The treadmill will also be used by my 110 pound wife who is 5ַ. On a personal note, when making a major purchase decision, I look for high quality and high value (I know, don’t we all).

If you are looking for a walking treadmill, then most any treadmill will do. Good picks in this category include the NordicTrack sold at Sears and other stores and my favorite pick: The Epic treadmill being sold at Costco for $899. The Epic is rated highly by Consumer Reports and is a good value. The Treadmill Doctor (a website that reviews treadmills) also finds this treadmill to be a value, but expresses concerns about the parts being lower quality. My experience with this fine machine is that it is a good machine for walking and some running. It has a long tread belt and a powerful 3.0 hp motor. That having been said, I am concerned about the short 1 year warranty and the fact that after a year, the machine did not feel as sturdy as day one. The sturdiness issue may be as simple as that the bolts needed tightening. A short disclaimer that the Epic is not in my house, but is at my parents’ house where it is being used for walking and running. Once again, for $899 and with Costco’s great customer service policy, I think this machine will serve most beginners and occasional users’ needs.

For my needs, I have whittled the selection of treadmills to two that I really like: The Landice L7 Cardio and the Pacemaster Gold Elite. The Landice L7 comes with a lifetime warranty on all parts and costs $2,899. The Pacemaster Gold Elite comes with a 5 year warranty on parts and costs $2,099.

Two of the salespeople I spoke to (from different stores) used the expression “this machine is a tank” when referring to the Landice. I agree with that statement, as the machine weighs 275 pounds and will handle users that weight up to 500 pounds (according to their website). The Landice frame is made of aluminum and secured with locking hardware as opposed to welding. The Aluminum is beneficial because it will not rust and the locking hardware is desired because it is more reliable than welding (poor welds can lead to squeaking and failure, while locking hardware is used on airplanes).

The motor on the Landice is a powerful 3.0 HP continuous duty drive motor, with a large flywheel to provide intertia for the treadbelt when your foot is striking down (this helps the belt to continue without hesitation). The treadbelt is also heavy duty using 4-ply that is supposedly twice as strong as other manufacturers’ treadbelts and that should minimize stretching. A quick tutorial on treadbelt stretching; as your treadmill gets used, the treadbelt will stretch and you will have to tighten the belt. The way to tighten the belt is to push the roller back towards the motor, eventually you will run out of room and will have to replace the belt. The deck is 1” thick and is a well-sized 20”W x 57”L, they claim that it should last 3,000 hours, but who cares how long it lasts, if it breaks down, call them and get a new one, you have a lifetime warranty. Finally, the shock absorption is “good”, Landice claims that its treadmills are softer than grass, however when I ran on the Landice, I found that it was much harder on my joints than the LifeFitness that I am accustomed to. I am told that serious athletes prefer the Landice because of its’ shock absorption which is firmer than most. The advantage of a firm shock absorption system is that you can push off easier and your joints will not hurt when running outside, whereas the softer shock absorption systems will help to spare your joints over time. By the way, this machine comes with a heart rate monitor and the console on this is cool.

The PaceMaster Gold Elite weighs a healthy 205 pounds and also comes with a 3.0 HP continuous duty motor. The warranty on this machine is not as good as the Landice, but is excellent nonetheless. The warranty on PaceMaster is 1 year on labor, 5 years on parts, 12 years on the motor and lifetime on the frame. The frame will hold a user up to 400 pounds and is made of welded aluminum. The treadbelt is made of a stretch resistant 2-ply and is rated for 10,000 miles. The deck is 3/4′” thick and is a better sized 20” x 60”. This machine comes loaded with running programs and a heart rate control monitor. While the console is not intuitive, it comes loaded with pertinent information that you will learn to love. Finally, running on this treadmill was a pleasure, the cushioning was comfortable and the machine was receptive to my speed/incline changes. I enjoyed this machine so much, that I went back for seconds a couple of days later.

In conclusion, both of these machines are great machines and will fit your needs if you are a runner that weighs under 400 pounds. I guess the last bit of pertinent information is price. For the Landice L7 Cardio, the best deal I negotiated was $2,895 with no tax, free delivery and a free mat. For the PaceMaster Gold Elite, the best deal was $1,850 plus tax, a free mat, and $100 worth of free accessories.

If you want further information or want to do some research of your own, follow the plan laid out here:

1. Visit the local fitness stores, the people working at a specialty store sometimes know a little bit more about what they are selling than the high school kid working at the we do it all sporting goods stores.

2. Read treadmill reviews, you can find some pretty good reviews on treadmilldoctor.com, at runnersworld.com and in the January 2005 consumer reports.

3. Don’t forget to visit the manufacturers’ website, almost all of them go into detail about their treadmills and tell you why you should be spending your money on their products.

4. Oh and before I forget, visit epinions.com, sometimes it sounds like the manufacturer is writing the reviews, but at other times its actual users that are sharing their experiences with you.

I hope this helps you in choosing a treadmill and that if you aren’t looking for one today, you’ll at least keep this email until you are and then use this as a point of reference. If not, then at least it helped me in making my decision. So, what is my decision on the treadmill I’ll be buying, I’m not 100% certain yet, but the Pacemaster sure sounds good at a $1,000 discount.
