Having been a member of several gyms, I have had the opportunity to try several varieties of elliptical trainers. When my wife and I decided to move to a home gym, we had a lot of choices to make regarding which machine to buy; more than we really were expecting. After a lot of careful consideration, we choose to go with the Precor EFX 5.23. It represents the best blend of functionality, durability, and comfort.
When trying to decide which machine to purchase, the first consideration was obviously “which machine will provide the most bang for the buck”. Of the several brands and models we looked at, only Precor and Diamondback offer a ramp adjustment (ramp inclines to work different muscle groups). Both models offer ramp and resistance controls, but Precor offers higher levels. We also liked how the Precor has all controls mounted on the display panel, rather than some on the panel and some on the handles, like the Diamondback.
Our next consideration was the durability of the unit. When we stepped on most units, they felt stable, but when motion began, they felt a little shaky ( some herky-jerky motion). The Precor felt as solid from the moment we stepped on to the moment we stepped off. In particular, I liked how the ramp was one solid piece rather than two. That lends itself to a much greater feeling of stability and durability. The 5.23 also had fixed grips (versus mobile grips that are designed to provide toning action for the arms). While other Precor models offer mobile grips, the Diamondback models do not offer fixed grips. This was important to us because the fixed grips help us maintain our balance when training for extended periods of time. It also adds to the overall feeling to stability.
The 5.23 has a great display that uses LEDs to indicate ramp incline, time, and heartrate (the EFX 5.23 uses Polar technology, heartstrap included). You can arrange display to show time into routine, strides, METS, WATTS, and Calories burned. Changing resistance or incline is at the touch of a button (the buttons are so sensitive, often you don’t even have to make full contact to effect a change). There is a holder built-into the display to keep a fairly large water bottle. It also has a raised lip to support magazines or books (another feature that really appealed to me).
The only drawbacks to this machine are 1) it’s huge — pick you location carefully; once it’s set up, you have to partially dismantle it to move it from room to room - unless you have all French-style doors - and 2) it’s the most expensive on the market. The latter is only a drawback if you are on a strict budget. We could have spent half as much on the Diamondback, but we felt it worth it for the stability and comfort of this machine.
Overall, this is my pick as the best machine on the market, especially for larger-sized people (of which I am). It’s comfort, features, and reliability have been excellent, even after lots of heavy use. Unit has a standard 2 year parts, one year in-home labor warranty.
