Precor is the BEST. Easy, Enjoyable and Effective. - Precor EFX 5.23 I have been doing various kinds of workouts for the last 15 years. Step classes, kick boxing, treadmill, stepper,...

Update: 12-12-04: We now have over 350 hours on the Precor EFX 5.21i and have not had any problems. Just a great machine!!

Update: 11-21-03: We have over 100 hours on the Precor EFX 5.21i and just love it. We have found the Precor EFX 5.21i to exceed all of the good points listed in my Original review. In all the years that I used a treadmill, my blood pressure stayed at 136/88. In three months my blood pressure has dropped to 124/82. Work is very stressful now and we are selling/building a home so the Precor must be the main reason for this. GREAT WORK OUT MACHINE!!!!

Original review:

I just purchased the Precor EFX 5.21i Elliptical Fitness Crosstrainer. I made this buy after doing research on the Elliptical Fitness machines. The machines that I have tried are the treadmill, stationary bike and the Nordic Track CXT 910. All three machines are down for repair right now. I found the stationary bike boring. The treadmill workout is great but I am now fifty years old and my legs cannot take the pounding anymore. The Nordic Track CXT 910 was a major mistake. It is almost always down for repairs. I am waiting for a tech to fix it right now.

I drove three hours to try out the Precor EFX 5.33. We, my wife and I, wanted this machine because of the upper body workout. It was a good move to drive up to Phoenix to try the 5.33 because we ended up buying the Precor 5.21i. The reason for the switch was because when using the arms on the 5.33 for the upper body workout, it seemed like an unnatural motion. We tried out the 5.21i and liked the machine immediately. The 5.21i was on sale for $2799, $700 off of the regular price. We also purchased the extended warranty package. It cost $329.99 more but gives you five years of repair service at home. I purchased this because of all of the trouble with other machines. Warranty with the 5.21i is life time for frame, ten years for parts and one year for labor.

Good Points: The machine is very stable when working out. I weight 200 pounds and when pushing it hard at the end of a workout, I get too moving from side to side. The 5.21i does not rock when I do this. It is very stable.

It gives you a great quiet workout. You can keep the volume to the TV down.

The display on this machine is very good and easy to operate. It gives you profile, time, strides, strides per minute, calories and heart rate (if you have the heart rate package) Also on the panel is the keys for the workouts, ramp (1-14) and resistance (1-20).

It gives you two options to start your workout. Quick start which goes with the manual course. Or Select, which lets you, input what type of workout you want to use. There are six courses to choose from. 1. Manual – you change the resistance and ramp during the workout. 2. Cross Training Interval – alternating one-minute segments of forward and backward pedaling. 3. Gluteal – ramp course is preset, but you can change this and the resistance during the workout. 4.Interval – it will set the resistance and ramp after the first two minutes. 5.Weight Loss – set time of 28 minutes and resistance & ramp is preset. You can change resistance and ramp setting which the machine will remember. 6. Heart Rate – you need to buy the Precor Heart Rate Option package for this course. The workout will maintain your target rate during the workout.

The machine is easy to put together but it took me three hours. I put it together in our master bedroom, which made the working area tight. I had no trouble even with my chocolate lab helping me. More about him later.

Bad Points: Expensive. The regular cost is $3499. It is heavy and hard to relocate after putting it together. The display does not give you the distance traveled. It gives you strides instead. I like to set my workouts to time and distance.

I will update this review after using the Precor 5.21i for a few months. Right now I am recovering from a knee injury. My chocolate lab smashed into my left knee running full blast and jumping over my Dalmatian. My knee buckled backwards on impact.
