Bowflex doesn’t just make bow machines. They make other equipment such as the Bowflex 7-Series Treadmill. Bowflex is owned by Nautilus, Inc. The retail price is $1,999.
Basic Information:
I am going to call this machine the 7 for the sake of ease of reading.
It weighs about 185 pounds. This is very light for a treadmill of this caliber. It can be folded. I did fold this machine because Bowflex claims that it has what they call a SoftDrop technology. I agree that this works. After I folded it I just pushed on it a little and the deck went gliding to the floor softly. I’ve never seen this.
It measures 83 inches long by 35 inches high by 55 inches high (approximately) which is a fairly standard size.
You will get a good warranty on the 7. You’ll get 15 years for the frame; 10 years for the motor; 2 years for the parts and electronics and 1 year for labor.
What I found really interesting was learning that there is no maximum user weight. That isn’t unheard of. But what I never heard of is that the warranty is good as long as someone over 300 pounds doesn’t use it. So though they don’t say there is a maximum user weight essentially there is. That’s an average number. To get into the higher numbers you will probably have to spend more money.
The belt is 60 inches long by 20 inches wide. I am more concerned with the length because I don’t like hitting the front of treadmills. This is a nice long surface. Twenty inches is good. You don’t want anything less than 17 inches wide.
You will now find treadmills with absorption system names for their belts. Some call them Flex Deck Shock Absorption System just to name one. Bowflex calls theirs Strike Zone. I don’t run but I do power walk. I was very happy on the 7’s deck. The deck felt firm when I lifted my feet but soft when I then put my feet down. After an hour my ankles didn’t hurt; my toes weren’t numb and my joints and back were just fine.
You’ll get a 3.0 horsepower motor. Again this isn’t the highest you’ll find but in this price range it is more than adequate.
The 7 is a quiet, well built machine. It is sturdy in spite of its weight.
I found sensors in the handlebars under the console to monitor my heart rate. It also comes with a chest strap so I didn’t have to take my hands off the side rails or put them on the sensors.
There are two integrated water bottle holders and a magazine rack.
The console:
I think the console on the 7 is very pretty. It’s large. I found a fan with three speeds- low, medium and high. The console seemed angled back more than others. It seemed that unless you are very short the fan will hit you. Two speeds is the more common number.
The console showed me my time, calories, calories per hour, distance, pace, segment time, incline and heart rate. (Segment Time showed the remaining time in the program I was using.),
The 7 has one of my favorite features- quick keys.
QuickSpeed allowed me to increase my speed or decrease it immediately. I didn’t have to push the incline or decline button for each tenth of a mile per hour faster that I want to walk or for each level of incline I want to walk. If I am walking at 3 miles an hour and want to go to 4 rather than pressing the up arrow, which is what is usually done, I just press 4 and it immediately jumped to 4. The keys are on each side of the console. The QuickIncline keys did the same but for the level of incline I wanted.
The machine goes from .5 to 11 mph and inclines from 0 to 12% - enough for just about anyone.
This machine has 15 workout programs and two heart rate programs. It also has something I have never seen before and that’s a body max index program.
Some of the programs on the 7 include a fat burn heart rate, cardio, running, hill and interval.
I’m going to briefly go through one of the programs. Since the BMI (body max index) is so unusual I’ll tell you how it worked. It isn’t a fitness test or a program but a calculation to show ideal weight range for your height. BMI was a big deal a few years ago. People thought it a useful tool showing the relationship between weight and height which is associated with body fat. However we have since seen that the number can be very inaccurate. You may weigh 145 pounds and be 5 feet 3 inches tall. Your BMI would show that you have too much body fat because it would give you a percentage that is high. However it doesn’t take muscle into consideration. If you are older you may have lost muscle mass but be thin. In person you can pinch a whole lot more than an inch but the calculation will show your BMI to be alright. So take all this with a grain of salt. In any case I was curious so I tried it.
I hit the power button and entered my weight. I then adjusted it using the arrow keys to the right weight and hit enter. I hit the keypad until I got to the BMI program and hit enter. I then entered my height and hit enter and I got my ideal BMI. Just as an aside I had a physical the other day and my doctor checked my BMI (I was fine.). This is a new doctor for me. My previous primary care physician didn’t use this index.
My thoughts:
You will find less expensive machines which I’ve reviewed by ProForm many of which I’ve given high marks and are one quarter the price. I am not comparing this machine to those. I think the quality of Nautilus equipment is very good as is the warranty. I want to mention that I don’t believe you will find anything about the 300 pound weight limit for the warranty written down. You can either take my word or if you are over 300 pounds and want to buy this check before you do.
The machine is light and in my opinion will perform much better if you are on the other side of 300. The programs are great. It is an easy to use and understand machine and it’s attractive. It folds and unfolds easily. You won’t get an adjustable deck like you will on a LifeFitness machine but you also won’t be spending $5,000. Five stars.
