Getting a new piece of exercise equipment means different things for different people. One of the most popular goals, promises or perhaps New Year resolutions is to get in shape. As a retired personal trainer, my recommendation is to get a piece of equipment you will actually plan on using. One piece of equipment other than weights that I highly recommend is a good treadmill. The BOWFLEX 7 Series Folding Treadmill is manufactured by Nautilus (www.nautilius.com). While this review will not be all inclusive it will cover the major areas of the BOWFLEX 7 that I feel are important as it relates to making an informed purchasing decision.

One of the first things you will notice about this particular treadmill is the durability of the machine; the BOWFLEX 7 is a high-quality heavy duty unit that weighs in at approximately 298 lbs with a maximum user weight of 300 pounds. You can also make long natural strides on its sturdy wide belt and if needed hold on to the two extended secure side rails for balance and support. I really like the wide strike zone, traction and responsive belt cushioning when walking and jogging on its 20″ x 60″/51 x 152 cm surface. Using the incline and speed features are easy with this treadmill cranking up to 11 mph. The 12% electronically controlled incline adds lots of self-directed variety to my workout. Its informative computer display LCD keyboard affords quick access to 15 different programs, with six designed for weight-loss and other programs geared toward various interactive workouts where you can change your minimum and maximum speed and time. I prefer using the quick keys which, cuts down on the whole programming aspect allowing me to get a no holds barred workout my way. The responsive futuristic looking console gives excellent feedback, on speed, distance, burned calories and heart rate.

If you are looking for power, you won’t have to look far, the beefy, 3.0 continuous horsepower (chp) motor has the big gym feel of a commercial-grade motor that gives a smooth ride when walking or jogging on its sturdy 2-ply belt. There are a lot of nice extras that come along with this treadmill including its built 3-speed built-in fan and two cup holder or one cup holder and media device holder (Zune). From top to bottom the BOWFLEX 7 is designed to promote optimal weight loss and aid in your performance training. My favorite or most frequently used feature is the handy (no pun intended) grip telemetric heart rate monitors which helps me work out at the right intensity.

Before getting an intense cardio workout system like the BOWFLEX 7 there are a number of things you should do. First things first, check in with your physician or health care professional before starting a treadmill walking program. If you are a beginner you should walk in short intervals, focus on your posture and get the feel of the machine. Second if you plan on putting this particular treadmill in your apartment or home make sure you have the space for it. This treadmills strength is the fact that it can be folded for storage, maximizing your space when it is not in use. Lastly, make sure you test out, visit a retailer or talk with someone who owns this model.

The name BOWFLEX is a staple in the home fitness industry and the company has a reputation for quality exercise equipment. Throughout the years I’ve worked out and trained upon a number of different treadmills both in-home and professional. I’ve owned some cheesy treadmills and a few used ones from Planet Fitness Gym. For the money, the 7 Series Folding Treadmill is a pretty good deal. It’s above average as it relates to its overall noise level and build, with a decent warranty.

Bottom line: Your personal fitness program might fail, but this treadmill won’t; it’s a work-horse. I’m giving this treadmill 5 out of 5 stars with high recommendations. You can’t go wrong here; you get commercial quality with a 3.0 continuous duty output motor that exceeds the standard 1.5 horsepower motor, solid 2 ply belt that’s easy on your joints, a sturdy yet flexible frame, and an easy to use control panel plus, Consumer Reports has given their seal of approval with their Best Buy rating. I’m not a fan of all the programming but I do like the extra bells and whistles offered and I love the 12% Incline(Yea baby!). Don’t let the cold weather prevent you from working out and maintaining your cardiovascular health check out the BOWFLEX 7.

Stay healthy in 2008.
