Almost every review I write is about a positive experience I have had with a product. This is not the same situation. I am reviewing the Weslo Cadence 340CS treadmill. This treadmill is slotted for someone on a budget but with a little bit more money you can get a much better unit. There are no bells and whistles with the 340CS. I actually spotted this treadmill at Target for $299.99 and decided to try it out. I have quite a bit of treadmill experience and knew that this was not something I was going to like but for the price I felt I’d give it the benefit of a trial run. Some of the basic size requirements were:

• Width – 28″

• Length – 60″

• Height – 57″

Motor

The 340CS uses a 2.0 HP peak drive motor. First off, I do not like peak motors. There are not nearly as powerful as their continuous duty counterparts. They also tend not to last as long. I do understand that if you want a treadmill cheap that you will not be getting a continuous duty motor you will get the peak motor. Continuous duty motors start in the $700 range usually. So knowing you are getting the peak motor you just have to deal with it. But that being said I would still like to see the motor being bumped up to 2.5HP like many of the Proform models. When I walk on the 340CS there is a noticeable lag in the belt coming out of the motor. I didn’t feel safe using the unit with this happening. I didn’t even want to try to run/jog on it. When I used to sell treadmills I never suggested that anyone ever run on a treadmill with less than 2.5 HP peak. The instruction manual for the Weslo says the unit is able to handle someone running on it. My question is who, someone that weighs less than 100 lbs? They probably don’t need to use a treadmill anyway. Also the motor is extremely noisy. I was using this thing and I couldn’t even hear myself think. It would even be hard to drown out with music or the television. I am definitely not convinced that this motor would last if someone were to use it every day.

Console

The console is extremely basic on the 340CS. This treadmill is only $299.99 so I don’t really expect more than the basic LED readouts and that is what you get. The console itself has two windows that provide you with the basic feedback options. They are:

• Calories Burned

• Fat Calories Burned

• Speed

• Time

• Distance

This is the bulk of the console. There is no heart rate monitor or pre set programs to discuss. If you want to change the speed on the unit there is a dial that you use. The 340CS can reach 8 mph which is plenty for me. I’m not even sure why the treadmill goes this high being that I can’t imagine someone actually running on the unit and feeling safe. The speed changes automatically but the dial is quite sensitive. It can turn rather quickly and increase the speed a little too fast for my liking. I prefer digital speed buttons so I can adjust to the exact speed I want rather than having to guess and adjust the knob to find the right speed. In my opinion the knob is one of the features that separate this treadmill from some others close to the same price. If you want to adjust the incline this cannot be done automatically on the console. At the base of the frame the incline can be adjusted to 4 different height levels. These are 3, 5, 7, 9%. This is not a terribly bad range of incline but the fact that you cannot change it on the fly while working out does bother me a bit.

The Deck and Frame

The belt on the Weslo is on 16″ wide and 45″ long. If you are someone on the tall or wide side this is not the treadmill for you. I didn’t feel comfortable walking on the belt. I found myself walking too far toward the front because I was compensating for my fear of falling off the back. Also I had to step in almost the same place every time to have enough room of the sides of me. The deck does have cushioning to protect your joints from the impact of walking. This was a pleasant surprise I didn’t expect the 340CS to have a cushioned deck. I would never even consider buying a treadmill if there was not some sort of cushion or reflex deck. You also don’t have to lubricate the belt on the Weslo like many other old units. Another thing I wasn’t too fond of was the fact that the frame shook quite a bit when I was walking. Now this could be because I am a bigger guy and someone who weighs in at 125 lbs. may not have the same problem. I just didn’t feel safe and it felt like the unit could come apart at any moment. This is also a Space Saver treadmill so it does fold up. This is a nice feature if you have kids around and you don’t want them jumping all over the treadmill when you are not around. The treadmill also comes with some hand weights but I didn’t use them as they are not my cup of tea.

Overall, I found the Weslo 340CS to be below average. It had some good parts, the price, cushion deck, the price. There were too many things that I didn’t find up to par with other treadmills. If you are looking for the cheapest treadmill you can find then maybe the 340CS is for you. If you are willing to spend slightly more though you can get a much better Proform unit with a larger belt, motor, digital speed control, automatic incline adjustment, pre set programs, and heart rate monitor. Even if you think you don’t need all those bells and whistles I suggest you try them both so you can see what a difference a bigger belt and bigger motor make when you are walking/running. Sorry everyone if this review seems like a bashing session, this was not my intention.
